Make your own matcha latte - step-by-step instructions (based on the traditional method)

Matcha has a long tradition in Japan, where its preparation has been refined over the centuries to exploit its full potential. The traditional method not only helps to preserve the valuable nutrients, but also ensures that the unmistakable taste unfolds optimally. In this guide, you will learn how to make the perfect matcha latte using traditional utensils and a few tricks.

What you need:

  • 3-5g matcha powder: Ceremonial grade matcha is particularly recommended, as it is appreciated for its fine texture and intense flavor and is ideal for a matcha latte

  • 60-70ml water: 80 degrees hot

  • 200-250ml milk of your choice: cow's milk, soy milk, almond milk, oat milk, etc.

  • Bamboo whisk (chasen): Traditionally used to whisk matcha until frothy

  • Sieve (furui): To sieve the matcha powder and avoid lumps.

  • Bowl (chawan): Mix with matcha and drink from it

Step 1: Sieve the matcha

Pour 3-5g of matcha powder through a fine sieve into the bowl. Sieving matcha prevents lumps from forming and ensures a uniform, fine texture, which makes it easier to dissolve in water and improves the taste.

Step 2: Heat the water and pour over

Heat 60-70ml of water to around 80 degrees Celsius and pour it over the sieved matcha powder. 80 degrees is the ideal temperature to release the flavors of the matcha without burning them.

Step 3: Beat the matcha until frothy

Use the bamboo whisk (chasen) and whisk the matcha in quick, w-shaped movements until frothy. The resulting foam is a sign of properly prepared matcha and brings out the fine aromas.

Step 4: Heat and froth the milk

Heat around 200-250 ml of milk until it is warm but not boiling. Then froth the milk until it reaches a creamy consistency - an important step to perfect the texture of your matcha latte.

Step 5: Merge

Slowly pour the frothed milk into the bowl with the whipped matcha. The combination of the creamy milk and frothy matcha ensures a harmonious blend of flavors.

Step 6: Enjoy

Your matcha latte is now ready! Traditionally, matcha is enjoyed without milk to experience the pure flavors. But as a matcha latte, it offers a modern variation that is given a special smoothness by the addition of milk. You can enjoy it on its own or add a touch of sweetness to suit your taste.
